Boost My Skills Through Volunterism as University Student

If I look back 3 years ago, the old version of me would be thankful because I began my volunteer journey at 18 years old under the non-governmental organization MyFundAction. Being a volunteer offers me many perspectives as a university student and an excellent opportunity to contribute positively to their communities from pre-schoolers age until older citizens while gaining valuable life experiences. As a University Sains Malaysia (USM) student, impactful results turn out to be revealed when I engage in mentoring, participating in environmental initiatives, and supporting youth projects.

Firstly, being a mentor for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers programs enables me to become more casual and expose the students to university life. I am also able to assist younger students academically and spiritually with the pathways they can make in life by choosing their careers. By sharing knowledge and offering guidance at schools, foundations, and matriculation across Malaysia, it boost my confidence to share with the students and help improve educational outcomes. This contribution not only benefits the mentees but also enhances the mentors' teaching and communication skills which is demanded for later job requirements.

Secondly, actively participating in environmental initiatives allows me to promote sustainability and enhance their surroundings. Activities such as park clean-ups, recycling programs, and tree-planting projects help maintain and improve local ecosystems in Malaysia. These efforts demonstrate a commitment that we dream of to save the world and preserve nature.

Lastly, volunteering for old folks and orphanage houses for food distribution makes me become more empathetic and care about others. Providing food and support to individuals facing hardship, it helps us to alleviate poverty and promote social well-being like communication skills with the old folks and handling toddlers and children. This type of service fosters empathy and social awareness, encouraging me to remain engaged in community support throughout their lives.

In conclusion, as a university student, being a volunteer can significantly contribute to the communities through mentoring, environmental initiatives, and supporting food distribution. These activities not only make a positive impact on ourselves but on the community in many forms like helping them to lighten the family burden and support them mentally for the challenges they encounter.
